NEWS

The Vetter Mountain Fire Lookout Tower was lost during the Station Fire.

Pam Morey has said it best, "It is with a heavy heart that I share this sad news with everyone. I was informed last night by District Ranger Mike McIntyre; our liaison, that we lost Vetter Mountain Lookout to the fire. I was reliving this day 7 years ago (September 1, 2002) to the day when I got word that we lost South Mount Hawkins Lookout to the Curve Fire.  I know George and I along with a lot of you have a special place in your heart for Vetter Mountain Lookout; let’s not forget though what we have not lost are the memories and stories and those stories we can share for many years to come. Vetter Mountain Lookout was a special place for so many people, Mike McIntyre who put in many hours and looked forward to the day it was staffed with volunteers, Ramona Mervin who spent 24 years watching for fires from Vetter, and a lot of Forest Service personal on the Angeles National Forest.

Vetter Mountain Lookout will be rebuilt in time. We do not know when that will happen at this time, I will keep you posted on that. Please keep in mind that we are not the only ones that have lost in the Station fire, some of our friends and fire fighters have lost their homes also.

Take your time to grieve and relive your time at the Lookout and look forward to the day when we will be back on that mountain top! "

Hello, my name is Charles and I am presently a U.S. Forest Service Volunteer Fire Lookout, participating with the Angeles National Forest Fire Lookout Association (website).  There are many books about fire lookouts, but not much about modern lookouts of today, so this is my log presented here on-line so that I may share my childhood dream and adventures with you my friends.  All views here are mine and mine alone if you know what I mean, but it is with pride that I try to live up to the standards that so many people that also wear the green uniform of the U.S. Forest Service do and I have been told by Forest Service personnel that my log is a credit to the Forest Service.  I hope my pride in volunteering becomes apparent as you read on because it is said that "volunteers are the heartbeat of the Forest Service" and I am proud to help out as I can.  Please read the disclaimers at the bottom of this page.

Ramona Merwin and family share their experiences of living and working for 31 years at Vetter Mountain Lookout.  A truly historic look of the tower, and living the life of being a full time Forest Service Fire Lookout family.
